Ismael Kone suffers leg break during World Cup match
Ismael Kone’s World Cup campaign has come to a distressing halt after he suffered a serious leg injury during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar. The incident occurred in the 53rd minute when Qatar’s Assim Madibo executed a reckless challenge, leading to immediate medical intervention, reports BritPanorama.
Emergency treatment was administered on the pitch where witnesses reported an audible crack as Kone’s leg broke. He was given oxygen before being carried off, but managed to wave to supporters as he left the field. Subsequently, the 24-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Kone was accompanied by team-mate Moise Bombito, who visited him and shared a light-hearted moment in a photo from the hospital. Despite the severity of the injury, Kone remained positive, indicating a resilient spirit as Canada looks to advance past the group stages of the tournament.
Canada’s manager, Jesse Marsch, confirmed the need for surgery, assuring that Kone would receive the best medical treatment possible. The injury, which overshadowed an otherwise historic night for Canada, saw Nathan Saliba stepping in for Kone, marking his debut with a beautifully curled free-kick. Madibo’s foul resulted in a straight red card, contributing to Qatar finishing the match with nine players after another dismissal occurred earlier.
Marsch noted that Madibo personally apologised to Kone in the dressing room post-match. Meanwhile, Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick, expressed frustration over the tackle, stating, “If there’s a play where you cannot win the ball, there’s no point. It’s just to hurt people.”
Kone has had a successful tenure with Sassuolo, netting six goals in 35 Serie A matches this past season. Having begun his career with CF Montreal, he moved to Watford in 2022 before securing a £15 million transfer to Marseille, followed by a loan to Sassuolo which turned into a permanent deal.
As Kone shifts his focus towards recovery, he leaves behind a Canadian squad poised for advancement in the tournament, while Qatar faces a must-win situation against Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain their hopes of progressing.
This incident illustrates the precarious nature of football, where glory can vanish in an instant, reminding fans and players alike how closely joy and despair can coexist on the pitch.
