Infantino promises Morocco World Cup final in exchange for support
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has promised Morocco that it will host the World Cup final, contingent upon the country’s ongoing support for his presidency, reports BritPanorama.
Under a plan to hold the decisive match at the new 115,000-capacity Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, rather than Madrid’s Bernabeu, Infantino aims to solidify his standing amid increasing pressure for his departure. Morocco is expected to co-host the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal, making it a critical ally for Infantino, who has faced challenges since taking office a decade ago.
Sources indicate the Casablanca venue could be the site of football’s most-watched match. However, FIFA has denied any formal commitment to this arrangement, with a spokesman stating, “It is false and misleading to claim the FIFA President has made any promise in relation to hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030 Final. A decision will be made by FIFA in due course.”
The assertion of Morocco’s role in hosting the final runs counter to statements made by Spanish FA President Rafael Louzan, who claimed that Spain would be “the leader of the 2030 World Cup.” Infantino’s critics argue that any such promise lacks substance and could be rescinded by a future leader.
In response to mounting calls for his resignation, Infantino convened a crisis meeting with key supporters at FIFA’s headquarters in Rabat. The meeting’s aim was to repair his administration amid backlash against his proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which sought to privatise FIFA’s commercial and event operations but faced substantial opposition before ultimately being withdrawn.
Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, who is now FIFA’s chief of global football development, has been among the critics of FFE, declaring the need for clarity and integrity within FIFA. Wenger commented, “The recent events at FIFA deserve some clarity from my side. The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question, because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity.”
