Clacton by-election results expected early Friday as counting faces challenges from record candidate list

Clacton voters are set to determine their next MP following a record-breaking by-election, reports BritPanorama.

Polling stations opened at 7am, and the 34-candidate ballot is expected to delay the counting, which may continue later than usual.

The outcome of the by-election is anticipated around breakfast time on Friday, though the intricate counting process could push the announcement as late as 5am. Once voting concludes, ballot boxes from 51 polling stations will be transported to the counting centre, where officials will verify the number of papers against polling-station records prior to the counting of all votes.

The lengthy ballot paper, which is almost a metre long, has created logistical challenges. Acting Returning Officer Ian Davidson noted that the ballot’s size complicates how staff will manage both the physical handling of the sheets and ensuring candidates’ representatives can observe the counting process effectively.

“Administratively, it’s about how we fit this ballot into the envelopes for postal voters, and when the voters receive their postal votes, how they get it into an envelope and get it back to us because it is that long,” Davidson explained. “We also have an issue for the counters, how we’re going to lay it out, how we’re going to ensure that those who are watching can see while at the same time managing these metre-long ballot papers.”

No exit poll will be conducted, and voters should not expect a projected result at 10pm. Voting is scheduled to run until 10pm tonight, and the contest employs a first-past-the-post system whereby the candidate with the most votes is elected, without the necessity of achieving a majority.

The by-election was triggered by Nigel Farage’s resignation as Clacton’s MP on July 8, 2026. Farage secured 21,225 votes in the 2024 general election, leading by 8,405 votes over Conservative candidate Giles Watling.
