Patrick Vieira appointed manager of Senegal

Patrick Vieira has landed a new job as the manager of Senegal after nearly a year without a move, reports BritPanorama.

Vieira, 50, has not held a managerial position since his dismissal by Genoa in Italy last November. He takes over following Senegal’s decision to part ways with Pape Thiaw after their elimination in the round of 32 at the World Cup, where the team squandered a two-goal lead against Belgium, ultimately losing 3-2 after extra time.

Thiaw’s tenure included controversy, notably the Afcon final where his side protested against Morocco due to a refereeing decision. Despite winning the competition in extra time, Senegal was later stripped of their title following an investigation. Vieira, now embarking on his first role in international management and sixth overall, will aim to guide the nation towards success in upcoming competitions.

His appointment has been confirmed via social media, with the Senegal Football Federation welcoming him as the new coach of the national team. This marks a significant return to the forefront of football for Vieira, who previously managed Crystal Palace in the Premier League, where he won 22 out of 74 matches.

Having enjoyed considerable success as a player, including a World Cup win in 1998 and the Euro 2000 with France, Vieira is well aware of the international landscape. He steps into a Senegal team rich in talent, with players such as Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Pape Sarr ready to support him. His first task will be preparing Senegal for Afcon 2027, with Mozambique scheduled as their opening match at the end of September.

As he takes charge of a squad boasting players from top leagues, Vieira’s challenge will be to harness the potential of this group and build on the legacy of the national team. His experience and insight could provide the necessary leadership as Senegal looks to reclaim its place on the continental stage.

In a sport where fortunes shift rapidly, Vieira’s journey with Senegal will be one to watch; sometimes, it’s the fresh perspectives that lead to the unexpected.
