Covid-19 cases on the rise as summer respiratory virus season approaches

Covid-19 summer wave observed in the U.S.

The ongoing summer wave of Covid-19 is prompting health officials in the United States to suggest that individuals experiencing symptoms such as coughing, hacking, or fever should consider taking a Covid test, reports BritPanorama.

Although the autumn respiratory illness season has not yet begun and cases of flu and RSV remain low, data indicate that Covid-19 cases are rising. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the test positivity rate for the week ending August 8 exceeded 3% for the first time since March, with increases noted in every state.

Despite this uptick, hospitalisations and deaths are not hitting alarming levels. Health experts point to a broader Covid season emerging as states such as Florida, Texas, and Georgia see increased activity. Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an expert in outbreak science at Johns Hopkins, noted that August marks the onset of Covid season, particularly in these southern states.

Routine and seasonal respiratory viruses, including Covid-19, are presenting earlier. While flu and RSV typically have a peak between December and February, Covid’s behaviour has seen it spike during both winter and summer. Precautionary measures are becoming important once again.

Strategies to monitor and prevent illness

Monitoring the spread of Covid-19 is essential to reducing the risk of illness. Dr. Amanda Zink, an emergency physician in Alaska, advises using health tracking tools that consolidate near real-time health data, which assist in understanding local virus trends. However, tracking has become more complicated as the federal government has reduced data collection efforts compared to earlier pandemic stages.

The CDC currently relies on various indicators, including wastewater data and emergency room visits, to gauge Covid’s circulation levels. In Alabama, the state health officer, Dr. Scott Harris, remarked that while hospitalizations and mortality rates remain stable, there is a noticeable “uptick” in cases.

Experts recommend Covid safety measures, such as wearing well-fitting masks and maintaining good hygiene, especially in areas of increased transmission. Regular handwashing is encouraged, alongside discussions with healthcare providers regarding vaccination, particularly for individuals at higher risk.

Preparing for potential illness

If someone does contract Covid-19, antiviral medications like Paxlovid can be effective if taken soon after symptoms arise, although they are no longer offered for free. It is advised to isolate and wear masks around others until fever-free for 24 hours.

As schools begin the new academic year and travel patterns shift, health officials underscore the likelihood of rising case numbers in the coming months. Continued vigilance and adherence to public health recommendations will be crucial in managing the situation.
