Liverpool faces major squad overhaul ahead of summer
Liverpool are preparing for a significant transformation of their squad this summer, expecting as many as nine players to leave Anfield after a disappointing season, reports BritPanorama.
The Reds have seen their campaign marked by early exits from the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League, leaving them fifth in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by 18 points with only six matches remaining.
Despite investing approximately £413 million in signings prior to the 2025-26 season, the club has not secured any silverware, leading to calls for significant changes.
Manager Arne Slot acknowledged the impending changes following their Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain, stating, “We have to sell to buy.” His own future remains uncertain as criticism mounts regarding the squad’s performance this season.
Among the confirmed departures is Mohamed Salah, who will leave after nine years at Liverpool, bringing to an end a tenure that was supposed to culminate in a triumphant farewell season. The Egyptian forward has reached an agreement to exit at the end of June despite extending his contract until 2027 just last year, citing differences with Slot and a dip in form.
Additionally, Andy Robertson will exit when his contract expires without a fresh offer, while Curtis Jones, also entering the final year of his deal, is generating interest from clubs including Inter Milan and Tottenham.
Liverpool are weighing whether to accept a fee for Jones now or risk him departing for free in 2027. Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott’s loan at Aston Villa has not worked out, leaving the club viewing him as a potential source of transfer funds rather than a reintegrating player.
With Federico Chiesa and Alexis Mac Allister also potentially on their way out, the club is bracing for a summer of change. Chiesa’s decline in form has seen him slip from being a fan favourite, while Mac Allister’s future remains in doubt without renewal talks despite his contract running until 2028.
As Liverpool embarks on this overhaul, many will be watching closely how the club strikes a balance between shedding underperforming talent and rebuilding for future success — a crucial juncture that could reshape the club’s identity in the seasons to come.
