Reform UK suspends Tim Montgomerie over criticism of party spokesman

Reform UK has suspended Tim Montgomerie, a high-profile supporter and former ally of Nigel Farage, after he publicly rebuked the party’s home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf for not being a “team player,” reports BritPanorama.

Montgomerie, a party board member and commentator, has been openly critical of Yusuf in recent weeks, suggesting in a podcast that “Nigel has fallen out of love with Zia.” His comments follow Yusuf’s controversial remarks about former Tory defence secretary Ben Wallace, which Montgomerie described as inappropriate.

The suspension comes shortly after Montgomerie accused Yusuf of undermining party policies by publicly interacting with Conservative candidates, despite their connections to the party. He noted that Yusuf had a history of not maintaining collaborative relationships, asserting that “a lot of people are on not-speaking terms with Zia.”

While discussing the party dynamics on the Spectator’s Coffee House Shots podcast, Montgomerie expressed concern over Yusuf’s frequent use of social media to air grievances, stating, “It needs to end. You cannot behave like a child in politics.” He also revealed that Yusuf had not spoken to him for three months after he assisted Robert Jenrick in defecting to Reform UK.

Previous criticisms by Montgomerie included Yusuf’s attacks on Wallace, stating, “This isn’t acceptable from Zia… they aren’t enemies… or ‘morons’.” The fractious relationship within the party highlights ongoing tensions regarding leadership and communication strategies.

Nigel Farage acknowledged Yusuf’s “over the top” remarks and indicated that he would address the matter directly with him. Montgomerie has also raised concerns regarding Farage’s handling of a £5 million donation received shortly before the 2024 general election, emphasizing that such significant financial contributions warrant transparency.

The recent developments within Reform UK come at a pivotal time as the party navigates internal challenges and public scrutiny over its leadership and policy direction. The ongoing discourse particularly underscores questions about the party’s coherence and electoral strategy.

As political dynamics evolve, it remains to be seen how these internal conflicts will shape Reform UK’s position ahead of future elections, impacting both party unity and public perception.
