This incident has drawn attention back to Kyrgios’s outspoken comments regarding past doping controversies involving fellow athletes, including Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek in 2024.
His remarks about former world No. 1 Simona Halep have also resurfaced. Halep, who tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat after the 2022 US Open and received a four-year suspension that was later reduced to nine months, had consistently maintained that she did not knowingly take a prohibited substance.
Kyrgios had previously accused Halep of “taking shady s**t” and suggested that his own Grand Slam record could have been significantly enhanced had he used similar substances. “If I took that stuff I’d have five Slams,” he commented at the time.
In response to the current developments, Halep posted a message on social media that hinted at the situation without naming Kyrgios directly, stating, “Never kick someone when they’re down. Life has a strange way of changing positions. And an even stranger way of revealing the difference between an accident and a choice.”
Kyrgios accepted full responsibility for his actions, emphasizing that while he faces struggles with injuries and career uncertainty, these challenges cannot justify his choices.
