UEFA and other governing bodies consider no-confidence vote against FIFA president

UEFA, Asia’s AFC, and CONCACAF are reportedly considering a no-confidence vote against FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This decision follows Infantino’s unsuccessful FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan to sell stakes to private investors in its competitions, including the World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

Sources close to the situation have indicated that the motion is pending, with remarks suggesting, “There is no way out. Either he goes the peaceful way and decides not to stand in March, or he goes the hard way.”

In addition, the non-profit fan network Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has expressed support for a petition advocating for Infantino’s resignation, opposing his proposals to sell stakes in the World Cup. This petition has garnered over 1,000 signatures since its launch this morning. The FSE emphasized that “football belongs to the people who fill the stadiums,” asserting that Infantino’s efforts to privatize the sport amount to a profound betrayal.

Some of the national football associations from England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland have also confirmed they have withdrawn their support for Infantino. Despite the mounting criticism, Infantino is preparing to run for a fourth term in March.

Notably, while the governing body CONMEBOL has stated it will not endorse a move to oust Infantino, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has shown backing for him. FIFA has responded to the challenges against Infantino by denouncing what it describes as a “concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine” his leadership.

As Infantino navigates these pressures, the response from the global football community poses significant implications for the future of FIFA and the governance of the sport itself. The unfolding narrative highlights tensions between authority and accountability within the footballing world, reflecting the passionate debates surrounding the game’s integrity and management.
