England faces DR Congo in World Cup knockout stage

England’s World Cup dream enters the business end today when Thomas Tuchel’s side take on surprise package DR Congo in the Round of 32, reports BritPanorama.

Kick-off is 5:00pm BST at Atlanta Stadium, with the Three Lions aiming to avoid a major upset and secure their place in the last 16.

England topped Group L after securing seven points from a possible nine. They commenced their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia, followed by a draw with Ghana, and sealed first place with a 2-0 win over Panama.

The Three Lions remain unbeaten, scoring six goals while conceding just two. Key players such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have played instrumental roles in the squad’s performance thus far.

However, DR Congo has demonstrated they are no pushovers. The African side advanced to the knockout stages for the first time after drawing 1-1 with Portugal, narrowly losing 1-0 to Colombia, and defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 to finish among the best third-placed teams. Yoane Wissa stands out as their key player, having netted two goals in the group stage.

England will be the overwhelming favorites, but Tuchel has cautioned his players against any complacency as pressure mounts in the knockout rounds.

A victory today would propel England into a last-16 clash against Mexico, who defeated Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday night. One more win would inch the Three Lions closer to ending 60 years of disappointment and maintaining their hopes of lifting the World Cup.

Tuchel’s warning over complacency

Thomas Tuchel has warned England they cannot afford to underestimate “overachieving” DR Congo as the World Cup progresses to its knockout stage. “We have to accept that we are favourites,” he stated. “With that comes responsibility and pressure.”

The England manager anticipates a tough contest against a resilient opponent. “I expect the match to be very difficult. They are a very compact, physical and well-drilled team,” he remarked. “Teams defend at the highest level in this tournament, and it’s difficult for any favorite to break them down.”

Tuchel urged his players to maintain patience if scoring opportunities are limited early on. “Don’t start to doubt, don’t lose belief and don’t lose patience,” he emphasized. “It takes two to tango. If one team doesn’t want to open the game, you have to find solutions.”

Despite the formidable challenge ahead, Tuchel remains confident in England’s ability to deliver. “I trust my players. If we show our quality, our discipline and our spirit, we will push this over the line,” he added. He further noted the importance of inspiring young fans watching their first World Cup game, calling it “a big motivation for us.”

Injury latest: Two out, two in

England has received a mixed injury update ahead of today’s match against DR Congo. Declan Rice is expected to return after missing the win over Panama, while adjustments must be made at right-back due to Reece James failing to recover from his injury. Jarell Quansah is also ruled out after suffering an ankle issue during the Panama game.

Djed Spence is anticipated to step in for James. Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka is in contention to play despite dealing with an Achilles problem. Tuchel expressed optimism that James and Quansah are “getting close” and hopes both could be available should England progress to the last 16.

World Cup latest

The World Cup knockout drama unfolded yesterday as France and Norway secured their places in the last 16, with Mexico joining them later in the evening.

Kylian Mbappe was the standout performer, netting a brilliant double as France triumphed 3-0 over Sweden, bringing his tournament tally to six goals. Norway, on the other hand, needed a late effort from Erling Haaland to edge past Ivory Coast 2-1 in a thrilling encounter, setting up a tantalizing clash with Brazil.

Hosts Mexico delighted home supporters with a clinical 2-0 victory over Ecuador, preparing to face the winners of the England versus DR Congo match in the next stage.

As the tournament progresses, the stakes are rapidly escalating, reflecting the spirit of competition, where expectations meet the unpredictable nature of football.
