Piero Hincapie sent off for covering his mouth in World Cup defeat

Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was sent off during Ecuador’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the last-32 at the 2026 World Cup, following an incident where he covered his mouth during a confrontation with Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez, reports BritPanorama.

The event occurred in stoppage time after goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez had already secured victory for Mexico. Hincapie, 24, approached Gimenez and placed his hand over his mouth while speaking to the player, prompting Gimenez to alert the Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic by mimicking the gesture.

Although Vincic did not initially see the incident, he consulted the video assistant referee who advised him to review the footage. Upon reviewing the video, he issued a red card, clearly seeing Hincapie concealing his mouth while speaking directly to Gimenez. This dismissal marks Hincapie as the second player in the tournament penalised under FIFA’s new regulation regarding confrontational mouth-covering.

Hincapie’s ejection concluded Ecuador’s World Cup campaign, allowing Mexico to advance to face either England or DR Congo in the next round. The defender reacted angrily to the decision, removing his wrist tape and exiting the pitch without acknowledging his opponents.

This controversial regulation was introduced after an incident involving Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni earlier in the year, highlighting FIFA’s focus on maintaining sportsmanship on the pitch. Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron was the first to receive a punishment under this rule, albeit with his team managing to secure a 1-0 win despite the setback.

Former Premier League player Jobi McAnuff expressed his support for the regulation during ITV’s coverage, stating, “I’m all for this rule… if you’re covering your mouth, you’re clearly saying something that you shouldn’t be saying.” Notably, England’s Jude Bellingham escaped censure despite similar behaviour in a prior match.

This incident serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of football regulations and how quickly they can impact a game’s outcome.
