Ukrainian drone strike in Nizhnekamsk kills 13
A Ukrainian drone attack Monday on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk killed 13 people and wounded 38 others, authorities in the Tatarstan region said, reports BritPanorama.
In recent months, Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities with long-range drones almost daily. This sustained assault has led to significant fuel shortages in Russia, diminished refining capacity, and has unsettled the Russian public.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that the campaign aims to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for more than four years.
The drone strike on Nizhnekamsk occurred during the morning hours and was described as a “massive” assault on both industrial and civilian sites, according to the press service of Tatarstan’s head, Rustam Minnikhanov. No further details about the attack were immediately available.
Nizhnekamsk, located approximately 750 miles east of the Ukrainian border, is a vital oil refining hub with a population of around 240,000. The city hosts two refineries and a petrochemical plant.
Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the incident. Nonetheless, Ukrainian drones have increasingly penetrated deep into Russian territory, with some reportedly reaching areas as far as Siberia, approximately 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) from the border.
President Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine’s responses to Russian strikes would be justified and noted that the impact of Russia’s war would be increasingly felt within its own borders. “Every Russian strike will be met with our response,” he said on social media.
He attributed the ongoing conflict to Russia’s reluctance to cease hostilities, stating, “The only reason this is still continuing is Russia’s unwillingness to end this war.”
Conversely, Russia has continued its aerial assault on Ukraine, employing missiles and drones that have targeted civilian regions, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties according to United Nations reports.
In related developments, the World Health Organization’s European office reported on Monday that one of its warehouses in Ukraine’s central Dnipro region was struck twice within a span of 24 hours. The attacks destroyed emergency supplies valued at approximately $500,000, intended for front-line health facilities, though no casualties were reported.
The consequences of such attacks reveal the escalating nature of the conflict, as both sides continue to inflict damage on territory and morale.
