Rory McIlroy settles into Surrey for the summer
Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica have moved to their Wentworth estate in Surrey for the summer, making the transition in advance of the Memorial Tournament, reports BritPanorama.
The 37-year-old golfer utilised a two-week break following the PGA Championship to establish his family in England. McIlroy, who purchased the property in 2023, has invested significant time in its renovation.
Despite the estate’s readiness, this move does not signal a permanent relocation. During the Ryder Cup, McIlroy clarified that the family’s primary home remains in America, with plans to retain that arrangement for the foreseeable future.
The couple’s decision was largely influenced by their daughter, Poppy, who turns six in August. McIlroy stated that a full-time move to London would occur only when Poppy is prepared for secondary school, emphasising the importance of her education and allowing the family to divide their time between continents.
Furthermore, the move offers a respite from Florida’s extreme summer heat, with the milder climate around Wentworth appealing to Erica, who prefers the English summer. This arrangement allows the family to enjoy both the comfortable temperatures in Surrey and their established life across the Atlantic.
Poppy has become a significant focus in McIlroy’s life, demonstrating interest in golf herself. The child gained attention during the 2025 Masters Par 3 Contest, showcasing her skills with a memorable putt. McIlroy expressed pride in her polite demeanor and growing interest in the sport, stating, “She is the most unbelievably polite and respectful and well-behaved little girl, and I really love that she started to get into the game a lot more.”
As McIlroy navigates the pressures of his career alongside motherhood, it highlights the balance many professional athletes must strike. His journey reflects the complexities of prioritising family amidst a public life defined by competitive sport.
