Police raid former Labour aide’s home amid spying allegations

Cops probing allegations of Chinese spying have raided the home of a former aide of Labour peer Tom Watson, reports BritPanorama.

James Robinson, a political consultant and former journalist, confirmed that police officers searched his property as part of an investigation that has already led to the arrests of three individuals over alleged Beijing-backed espionage.

Robinson, who is married to former Labour MP Gloria de Piero, stated that he has not been questioned, detained, or arrested in connection with the investigation. “Naturally, I co-operated fully with the police,” he noted, adding that he intends to continue to assist the authorities as their inquiries proceed.

It is understood that his previous role as an aide to Lord Watson from 2015 to 2018 may have contributed to the scrutiny surrounding him. In a related context, Labour MP Joani Reid recently resigned from the party following the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of spying for China.

Taylor is among the three men detained by Counter Terror police on allegations of assisting foreign intelligence. Along with him, Steve Jones, 68, and Matthew Aplin, 43, were also arrested, although all three were released on bail a day later.

As investigations into these allegations continue, the implications for Labour’s political climate and its relations with China are yet to be fully assessed. The unfolding situation underscores ongoing concerns regarding national security and foreign influence within UK politics.

This development highlights the complexities of political affiliations and the scrutiny that can arise from connections to foreign powers, drawing attention to broader themes of security and accountability in contemporary governance.
