Gary Lineker challenges Harry Maguire's views on Harry Kane's World Cup aspirations

Gary Lineker critiques Harry Maguire’s comments on Harry Kane

Gary Lineker issued a sharp critique of Harry Maguire’s characterisation of Harry Kane’s competitive spirit during Tuesday’s episode of the Rest is Football on Netflix, reports BritPanorama.

The exchange unfolded as Maguire suggested that England’s captain was not focused on rival players like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in pursuit of World Cup goal records. Lineker retorted with a blunt dismissal, stating, “I think that’s b******ks,” eliciting laughter from the show’s participants.

This conversation took place mere hours before England’s crucial Group L match against Ghana that evening. Fellow panelist Joe Cole remarked on Lineker’s skeptical reaction, playfully referencing a “strikers’ union” mentality amongst former forwards.

Maguire stood firm in his defence, asserting that Kane’s scoring philosophy is fundamentally different from the fierce rivalry displayed by Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. “He will be watching it, but he’s not the type of player – he’s so humble – I don’t think he’s thinking ‘he’s scored, I’ve got to score’,” the Manchester United defender stated.

He elaborated that while Kane enjoys scoring goals and has demonstrated his proficiency with two goals in England’s recent 4-2 win against Croatia, he prioritises the team’s success over personal accolades. “I don’t think he’s one of those who focuses on other people. He’s such a team player,” Maguire added.

As the competition for the Golden Boot intensifies, Kane finds himself trailing Messi, who has netted five goals for Argentina, and Kylian Mbappe, who has scored four times. The scrutiny on Kane’s performance heightens with Lineker’s candid rejection of Maguire’s perspective, just before a pivotal match against Ghana.

In the world of elite football, personal ambitions often intertwine with team dynamics. As the Three Lions prepare for a critical fixture, the debate surrounding Kane’s mindset and competitive nature resonates beyond the pitch — a reminder of the intricate balance between individual prowess and collective goals in the pursuit of victory.
