Trump announces release of U.S. citizen held in Iran since 2024

U.S. citizen released from Iran after wrongful detention

A U.S. citizen who has been held in Iran since 2024 has been released, President Donald Trump and her lawyer separately announced Wednesday evening, reports BritPanorama.

Trump confirmed the release of a woman he indicated was wrongfully detained in December 2024 and stated that she is now “safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.” He expressed appreciation for what he termed a “gesture of goodwill by Iran.” The citizen’s identity was not disclosed in Trump’s initial announcement but was later confirmed.

The lawyer, Jared Genser, identified the released citizen as Dena Karari, who had faced charges in Iran. Genser, known for working on high-profile cases of U.S. detainees, celebrated the news, attributing her freedom to the “extraordinary and relentless efforts of President @realDonaldTrump.” He indicated that she is on her way back to the United States.

Details revealed that while Karari had not been physically detained, she was subjected to a “coercive exit ban” and underwent extensive interrogations by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry. Her involvement with the nonprofit organization, the Children of Mehr Foundation, which assists impoverished children in Iran, was the focus of the scrutiny against her.

The foundation’s efforts are backed by private donor support and an OFAC license from the U.S. Treasury Department. Genser also called on Iran to drop charges against individuals associated with the foundation within the country.

Currently, as many as five other Americans remain held in Iran. Among them are Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, both of whom have been publicly classified as wrongfully detained by the U.S. State Department.

The broader context of U.S.-Iran relations remains tense, with the implications of such releases potentially influencing future diplomatic interactions. Observers will be monitoring how this incident may shift the strategies of both nations moving forward.
