Trump praises suspension of Balogun's ban, calls it a reversal of injustice

Fifa suspends Balogun’s red card ban amid player eligibility concerns

Florian Balogun’s one-match suspension following a straight red card has been temporarily lifted, an announcement celebrated by Donald Trump as a “reversing [of] a great injustice”, reports BritPanorama.

The United States striker received the red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic during a match that the co-hosts won 2-0. Fifa stated the automatic ban would be suspended for at least a year, allowing Balogun to play in upcoming matches.

According to Fifa’s statement: “In line with Article 27 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.” Should Balogun receive another infringement of a similar nature during this period, the suspension will be enforced without prejudice to any additional sanctions for the new infringement.

Trump publicly expressed gratitude to Fifa for their decision on his Truth Social account, stating: “Thank you to Fifa for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President Donald J. Trump.”

With the ruling, Balogun is now eligible to participate in the United States’ last-16 contest against Belgium, scheduled for early Tuesday morning. He has been an essential player in the World Cup, scoring twice against Paraguay in their opening match, which the US won 4-1, and netting again against Bosnia prior to his dismissal.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was among several senior officials advocating for a review of the red card decision, asserting, “It was great. They got screwed with that red card. There needs to be an appeal process for that. It’s probably too late for that.”

US Soccer welcomed the decision, stating in a release: “[We] are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow.” Teammates learned the news while travelling to training, with forward Christian Pulisic recounting, “We found out about it just coming over here. At first, you’re like: ‘Oh really, is this real?’ And then: ‘Oh, this is great news’.”

The US team now aims to match their second-best World Cup performance, seeking victory against Belgium, while striving to surpass their third-place finish in 1930. Belgium advanced to the last-16 following a thrilling 3-2 comeback against Senegal, clinching their place with a last-minute penalty from Youri Tielemans.

As the tournament progresses, the intersection of sport and politics remains apparent, with decisions on eligibility shaping the narrative on and off the pitch. The unfolding events illustrate just how pivotal moments can alter the course of a team’s journey.
