Reform UK proposes priority for working under-35s in social housing

Reform UK has announced plans to prioritise working Brits aged under 35 for social housing, alongside forces veterans and married couples with children, reports BritPanorama.

Richard Tice, the party’s deputy leader, stated that many young British men and women are struggling to afford moving out of their family homes. The proposal aims to address the increasing challenges faced by this demographic amid high living costs.

In conjunction with this initiative, Reform UK has committed to removing foreign nationals from an estimated 540,000 social homes after a grace period. The party claims that as many as 195,000 of the 1.3 million households currently on waiting lists are foreign.

Mr Tice is also expected to announce a target of constructing 50,000 affordable homes annually. He argues that this plan is fiscally neutral and would not necessitate new taxes or additional borrowing.

A government spokesperson has disparaged the proposal, describing it as “unserious and unworkable.” They clarify that access to social housing is already rigorously regulated, stating that illegal migrants, asylum seekers, and those on student or work visas are ineligible. The spokesperson cautioned that the policy could adversely affect long-term UK residents who have contributed to society but are not British citizens, including essential NHS staff.

The ongoing debate highlights the complexities surrounding social housing in the UK, reflecting broader socio-economic concerns and the challenge of balancing local interests with those of a diverse population.
