Spectator ejected during World Snooker Championship semi-final

A spectator was ejected from Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre on Saturday evening after disrupting the World Snooker Championship semi-final between Wu Yize and Mark Allen with shouts referencing the Epstein Files, reports BritPanorama.

The unusual disruption occurred at a critical point in the match as the players prepared to contest the decisive 33rd frame of their tense last-four encounter. As Wu readied himself to play, a voice from the audience cried out, “never forget the Epstein Files,” an apparent reference to the extensive documentation surrounding the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Referee Marcel Eckardt swiftly intervened, demanding the removal of the protester. He stated, “Can you get this person out please, now please.” His instruction was captured by BBC cameras broadcasting the match live, while fellow spectators expressed their displeasure at the disruption by urging the individual to be quiet.

The atmosphere in the venue shifted as those present grasped the nature of the outburst. The unidentified protester was photographed and subsequently escorted from the historic Sheffield arena, contributing to an already dramatic semi-final.

Despite the interruption, Wu maintained his composure and ultimately claimed victory over Allen with a thrilling scoreline of 17-16. Allen had been poised to secure his place in the final, holding a 16-15 advantage and needing only to sink a straightforward black ball. However, he missed the opportunity, allowing Wu to level the match and force a deciding frame.

The Chinese player capitalised on the moment, completing a remarkable comeback to book his place in Sunday’s final. This followed an extraordinary semi-final that featured a previous day of record-breaking play between the two competitors, where they engaged in the longest frame in World Championship history, lasting 100 minutes and 21 seconds.

During that encounter, an unusual situation developed when the positioning of the black ball inhibited potting eight reds, resulting in extended safety play that tested the patience of the audience. Eckardt had to intervene, giving the players three attempts to break the deadlock, with Allen eventually compelled to pot the black deliberately to resolve the situation.

Six-time world champion Steve Davis described the scenes during the semi-final as “embarrassing,” while seven-time Crucible winner Stephen Hendry referred to the episode as the “dark side of snooker.” As the final beckons, the unpredictable nature of sport and the unexpected twists of fate remind us that in snooker, as in life, anything can happen at any time.
