Rory McIlroy encounters spectator incident at US Open

Rory McIlroy escaped unscathed from a bizarre incident involving a spectator on the opening day of the US Open after a fan appeared to pick up his golf ball during an eventful round at Shinnecock Hills, reports BritPanorama.

As McIlroy battled through thick rough at the fourth hole, his recovery shot rebounded off a cart path, landing near spectators gathered alongside the fairway. What transpired next left onlookers astonished.

A woman in the crowd appeared to bend down and either touch or briefly lift the golf ball, seemingly oblivious to its status as still in play. Videos captured the moment the crowd reacted, with many fans exclaiming “No!” in unison as they recognised the potential regulations breach.

Fortunately for McIlroy, the incident did not affect his performance; he managed to make par on the hole and finished the day with a one-under-par 69, a promising start at a venue notorious for one of his worst rounds eight years prior.

Nevertheless, golf fans on social media were less forgiving, expressing outrage over the spectator’s actions and calling for punitive measures. Some comments ranged from calling her behavior absurd to suggesting that she might have confused golf with another sport, perhaps thinking it a souvenir opportunity similar to baseball.

The USGA reviewed the situation, confirming the details through video analysis and interviews with fans after the incident. They stated: “Right after McIlroy’s second shot on the 4th hole came to rest, it came close to a spectator.”

Despite disruptions earlier in the day due to dense fog, McIlroy’s form remained sharp. He briefly held the outright lead during the round at three under before a couple of bogeys on his final holes dampened his start. His score marked an 11-shot improvement from his opening round in 2018, demonstrating a significant turnaround in performances.

McIlroy’s proficiency was particularly evident in his putting, holing over 100 feet across the course. He showcased his skills with an eagle and three birdies, notably a remarkable 396-yard drive and a precise putt from just over 11 feet on the fifth hole.

On the leaderboard, England’s Tommy Fleetwood opened with a level-par 70, while Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg also matched McIlroy’s 69. Meanwhile, world No 1 Scottie Scheffler faced a tougher day with a two-over-par 72, and defending champion JJ Spaun struggled after a disappointing 77.

As the tournament unfolds, McIlroy’s incident serves as a pointed reminder of the fine line athletes walk in the public eye—how even the simplest of moments can spark unruly reactions, whether on the course or along the fairway.
