Jose Mourinho returns to Real Madrid for a second stint
Jose Mourinho declared he had “returned home” after officially beginning his second spell as Real Madrid manager in an unusually private unveiling on Tuesday, reports BritPanorama.
The Portuguese coach was formally presented after completing his sensational return to the Bernabeu, signing a three-year contract that will keep him in the Spanish capital until June 30, 2029.
However, there was no grand public welcome for Mourinho despite the enormous attention surrounding his appointment. Real staged the ceremony behind closed doors at their training complex, with supporters and members of the media unable to attend.
Fans were given only a limited glimpse of proceedings through images released on the club’s official channel. Mourinho appeared alongside president Florentino Perez as he put pen to paper on his contract before posing with a personalised Real Madrid shirt. “I have returned home,” the 63-year-old stated as he formally started his latest chapter with the Spanish giants.
The manager was presented with a replica of Real Madrid’s stadium and a watch to commemorate his return. Honourary president Jose Martinez Pirri was among those present for the ceremony, which took place in a meeting hall at Real Madrid City.
The low-key nature of Mourinho’s unveiling was not specifically reserved for the returning manager. Real have adopted a new approach to presentations this summer despite completing a major overhaul of their squad. Six players have arrived alongside Mourinho, but none will receive the traditional public unveiling that has previously accompanied high-profile signings at the Bernabeu.
Each presentation will instead take place behind closed doors, with only club representatives and people close to the individual being unveiled permitted to attend. The first of Real’s new players is due to be officially presented on Wednesday as the club continues to introduce its summer recruits under the same format. Mourinho, however, will face the media later in the week.
His first press conference since returning as Real Madrid manager is scheduled for Friday, when he is expected to discuss his appointment and plans for the new campaign. There will be little time for the Portuguese to settle back into life in Spain.
Mourinho’s return brings him back to a club where he previously spent three eventful seasons between 2010 and 2013, during which he won LaLiga in the 2011-12 campaign with a then-record 100 points, along with the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. His initial tenure was characterised by fierce battles with Barcelona and considerable tension behind the scenes before he departed for Chelsea.
Over a decade later, Mourinho has now been entrusted with the Real Madrid job once again. His unveiling, although considerably more understated than many of the club’s traditional presentations, underscores his personal significance to this new chapter.
As the new season approaches, the path ahead for Mourinho is clear: a return to the spotlight with all its demands and expectations intensifies the narrative around what it means to reclaim a past triumph. A test awaits not just on the pitch, but in redefining the club’s identity under his management.
