Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager

Brendan Rodgers has resigned as Celtic boss just days after a devastating 3-1 defeat to table-toppers Hearts, a club statement has confirmed, reports BritPanorama.

The statement indicated, “Celtic Football Club can confirm that football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation. It has been accepted by the Club and Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect.” The club expressed appreciation for Rodgers’ contribution during both of his successful tenures.

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill and ex-player Shaun Maloney will take charge of the first team on an interim basis. The club noted, “We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters. Further details will be confirmed shortly.”

Rodgers exits the Hoops while they sit eight points adrift of Hearts, in what has been a turbulent season for the club thus far. Having rejoined in 2023 to replace Ange Postecoglou, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur, Rodgers’ second spell was characterized by underwhelming performances.

During his previous tenure from 2016 to 2019, Rodgers oversaw significant success, securing four league titles and domestic cups. However, in recent weeks, he expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transfer activity, highlighting the club’s modest summer expenditure of just £13 million, which he felt left him without adequate resources to compete. He notably described his squad as a “Honda Civic” tasked with being driven “like a Ferrari.”

This conflict regarding transfers ultimately culminated in his resignation, marking the end of a five-year association with Celtic. Both O’Neill and Maloney bring a wealth of experience and affiliation with the club, ensuring continuity as the search for a new permanent manager begins.

As the dust settles on this managerial upheaval for Celtic, it underscores the delicate balance between ambition and execution in football — a reminder that even the best-laid plans can rapidly go awry.
