LIV Golf secures new investment package
LIV Golf’s future has received a significant boost as a new investment package has been “signed” and “approved”, reports BritPanorama.
The announcement was made by the league’s CEO, Scott O’Neil, during a press conference held at Trump Bedminster. He highlighted that this move will usher LIV into its “new era” and noted strong interest from a variety of potential investors.
O’Neil stated, “LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players.” He further emphasized that there is considerable interest from more than a dozen additional parties looking to act as minority investors, aiming to create a multi-partner model focused on long-term stability and growth.
Importantly, O’Neil mentioned that the upcoming chapter will see players holding the majority equity in LIV Golf, which would be a first for a major global sports league, thereby laying the groundwork for future growth of the sport worldwide. He anticipates finalising terms in the coming weeks, aiming for a transaction completion by September.
This development comes as the league has faced uncertainty following Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund’s announcement in April to withdraw its backing at the end of the season. O’Neil’s news follows a players’ meeting led by Bryson DeChambeau, where power dynamics within the league were expected to shift towards its star players. Additionally, the recent cancellation of the anticipated season-ending Team Championship has added to the league’s challenges.
Former major champion Martin Kaymer, who captains Cleeks GC, noted that the championship was “highly unlikely” to take place after attending a prior captains’ meeting. With only two tournaments remaining in the 2026 schedule in the United States, LIV Golf Indianapolis and LIV Golf New York, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape the league’s immediate future.
This year’s prize fund has been reduced to $40 million (£29.6 million) from last season’s $50 million (£37.1 million), and the champions’ payout is down from $14 million (£10.4 million) to $11.2 million (£8.3 million). The announcement of new investment today offers a much-needed boost to LIV Golf’s players, including prominent names like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, as the league navigates these fiscal and competitive challenges.
In the world of golf, where financial support and player empowerment are increasingly intertwined, the stakes remain high as LIV Golf seeks to redefine its position within the sport. It’s a reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift in modern sports, leaving everyone watching closely as developments unfold.
