Xabi Alonso acknowledges Chelsea players’ emotions as Mykhailo Mudryk returns
Xabi Alonso has stated that Chelsea players were “emotional” during Mykhailo Mudryk’s long-awaited return to competitive football. The Ukrainian made his first appearance for Chelsea in 20 months during a match against Juventus in Hong Kong, where he came on for a brief cameo in the 82nd minute, reports BritPanorama.
The 25-year-old was welcomed back with cheers from the 43,000-strong crowd, nearly connecting with a through-ball shortly after his introduction. Mudryk had travelled to Hong Kong to join his teammates, with Alonso noting that the player’s return significantly impacted those within the club.
“It was emotional for everyone at the club to see him back, especially when I told him before the game that he could play for 10 to 15 minutes,” Alonso remarked. “He was thrilled, for sure. After such a long period, it was a great feeling for him to be back on the pitch, and for everyone as well.”
Since the announcement of his return, speculation has intensified regarding Mudryk’s future with the club. Alonso commented, “No decision has been made,” emphasizing the need to focus on Mudryk’s reintegration into the team.
The Ukrainian resolved a doping case with the Football Association just last week, which had resulted in a four-year ban. However, the appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport led to the FA confirming that he could resume competitive play “with immediate effect.”
“Everything has happened so quickly, so the main thing is thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of a team, and we need to assess,” Alonso added regarding Mudryk’s situation. “But for sure, he’s a special player. It’s a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive.”
Mudryk expressed relief and gratitude upon receiving news of his clearance. In a statement on social media, he said, “After a long battle, the four-year ban that was imposed on me has been rescinded, and I am free to resume my career with immediate effect. This has been the most difficult period of my career.”
He continued by thanking “my family and friends for their support” and conveyed appreciation to “everyone at Chelsea FC, my teammates and the Chelsea supporters who have been with me throughout.” As he looks ahead, he stated, “My focus now is on returning to football, working hard every day, and making a positive contribution on the pitch.”
