Julie Tetart discusses potential WNBA opportunity amid transgender sports debate
French transgender basketball player Julie Tetart has expressed that the chance to compete in the WNBA would be “impossible to refuse,” amid ongoing discussions about transgender participation in women’s sport, reports BritPanorama.
Tetart, currently playing in Monaco, addressed the possibility of playing in the world’s foremost women’s basketball league during an interview with OutKick. The conversation on transgender athletes competing against biological women continues to be a contentious issue.
“If they contact me, I won’t say no,” Tetart remarked. “But you have to be realistic: I’m old, and there are far better players than me,” she added, acknowledging the competitive nature of the league.
When asked about her dreams playing in the WNBA, Tetart referred to it as a childhood aspiration akin to those of any female basketball player, yet clarified, “the league, yes. The country, no, haha.”
Tetart came out as transgender in October 2021 and has since seen significant success in France’s second-tier Ligue 2, where she led the division in scoring and rebounding during the 2025-26 season, averaging 21.2 points, 20.2 rebounds, and two assists per game. Her exceptional performance earned her Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Domestic Player of the Year titles.
During the interview, Tetart was also asked about comments made by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who called for the protection of women’s sport amid these discussions. Cunningham stated, “I want to protect young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
In response to this, Tetart replied succinctly in French: “Aucun,” meaning “None,” and did not elaborate further. The debate over transgender athletes in women’s sport has intensified recently, with supporters of Cunningham organizing demonstrations outside Indiana games to back the call for protecting competition for biological women.
This ongoing issue has prompted governing bodies to reassess eligibility policies. Recently, the WTA announced a mandatory one-time gene test for all players under revised eligibility regulations, positioning itself as the first major professional sports organization to adopt such a measure.
