Andy Burnham’s leadership poses challenge to Green Party as Labour shifts focus
Andy Burnham’s recent ascension to the leadership of the Labour Party may significantly impact the Green Party’s surge in support, with political analysts suggesting that the new prime minister could reclaim left-wing voters who previously abandoned the party under Sir Keir Starmer, reports BritPanorama.
Despite this potential advantage, experts caution that the Green Party, led by Zack Polanski, “will not fade as a threat to Labour” until Burnham’s government demonstrates its ability to effect meaningful improvements in citizens’ lives. Supporters of Burnham hope that he can stem the growing enthusiasm for the Greens, who have recently gained traction in the polls, notably by outperforming Labour and Reform UK in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
Even prior to Burnham’s formal appointment, he has begun to realign Labour’s policies to resonate with potential Green voters, including a public apology regarding the party’s stance on Gaza. A YouGov poll conducted shortly after Starmer announced his resignation indicated a two-point rise for Labour, coinciding with a decline in Green support by the same margin.
Julian Gallie, head of research at Merlin Strategy polling firm, highlighted that Burnham represents a substantial challenge to the Greens, suggesting that his leadership provides an opportunity to engage disenchanted Labour voters who may have turned to the Green Party. He noted, “These interventions do remove some of the main barriers for Green voters thinking about returning to Labour. However, if there is no improvement on the cost of living, then the Greens will not fade as a threat to Labour.”
Polling expert and peer Lord Hayward echoed this sentiment, stating that a Burnham-led Labour Party could potentially draw some dissatisfied Labour voters back from the Greens. He, however, emphasized the necessity for Burnham to showcase his competence in governance to gain wider support from those uncertain of Labour’s effectiveness, stating that this is paramount for many voters today.
On the other hand, Professor John Curtice advised a more measured perspective, indicating that while Labour experienced a temporary boost of 2 to 3 percentage points in the wake of Starmer’s departure, this immediate gain appears to have dissipated. Curtice noted, “If it does [recover], it is more likely to hit the Greens than Reform, although support for Reform is down anyway in wake of Farage’s decision to call the by-election.” He acknowledged the complexity of the current political landscape, marked by numerous fluctuating elements.
