Gary Lineker's role in ITV's The Box raises questions about his hosting suitability

Gary Lineker hosts new ITV game show despite mixed reviews

Gary Lineker has taken on the role of host for ITV’s new game show The Box, which features a cast of lesser-known celebrities facing a series of unpredictable challenges. The show’s unique format has sparked curiosity, leaving contestants like Jenny Ryan, better known as The Vixen from The Chase, wondering about their participation, reports BritPanorama.

In the opening episodes, celebrities such as former Speaker of the House John Bercow and presenter Ranvir Singh are confined to boxes and transported to various locations, including a racecourse and a church, where they must participate in tasks like finding small objects or preparing performances in limited time. This unusual setup offers a fresh take on reality television, blending physical and mental challenges.

However, the show’s success is somewhat overshadowed by Lineker’s performance as host. Critics have pointed out that his commentary often comes off as awkward rather than engaging, as he attempts to navigate the show without providing direct instructions to the contestants. This absence of interaction leaves him primarily as an observer, detracting from the show’s dynamic.

Lineker’s reliance on common football phrases and his tendency to exaggerate the significance of seemingly mundane events, such as an egg-and-spoon race, has garnered mixed reactions. Audiences have noted his reluctance to fully participate in the show’s excitement, contrasting sharply with the enthusiastic antics of the contestants.

This marks Lineker’s second foray into game shows, having previously hosted Sitting on a Fortune. While his experience may suggest potential for success, The Box requires a different energy that he appears to lack. Viewers are left questioning his motivation for joining the program, especially as his podcast production company, Goalhanger, experienced significant financial success last year.

Despite his established reputation and prior successes, the question remains: what drew Lineker to a Saturday night game show? As the series unfolds, viewers are left to ponder whether he finds enjoyment in a less controversial role, though many seem unsure of his sincerity during the show.

The Box starts tonight at 8.15pm on ITV
