Alexis Sanchez reveals regrets over Manchester United move
Former Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez disclosed that he wanted to cancel his contract with the club after just one training session, describing a sense of unease that immediately set in, reports BritPanorama.
Sanchez’s transfer to United in 2018 was heralded as a landmark acquisition, following an impressive final season at Arsenal where he netted 24 league goals and provided 10 assists. However, he found the transition to Old Trafford to be strikingly difficult from the outset.
In a 2020 interview, Sanchez shared his initial feelings of discomfort, recalling that he returned home from that first session pleading with his agent to terminate the deal. “There was something that didn’t sit right, it didn’t seem good,” he noted. Continuing, he remarked, “We weren’t united as a team in that moment,” reflecting on the lack of cohesion he sensed at the club.
The move was marked by significant anticipation, with then-manager José Mourinho calling Sanchez one of the best forward players globally. An announcement video, notorious for its cringe-worthy content featuring Sanchez playing ‘Glory Glory Man United’ on a piano, has overshadowed his actual contributions on the pitch.
Sanchez’s statistics at United proved disappointing; he managed only three league goals across two seasons before departing for Inter Milan, marking one of the most disheartening transfers in the club’s history. Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger diagnosed the issues faced by Sanchez as related to a loss of confidence, explaining that players thrive when they feel free to express their initiative.
Despite his struggles in Manchester, Sanchez continues to maintain a professional career and recently joined MLS club CF Montreal at the age of 37. His tenure at United, nevertheless, stands as a cautionary tale about the unpredictable nature of football transfers and the challenges of adapting to new environments.
