Andy Burnham warns of ‘tinderbox’ conditions amid wildfires across Britain
Andy Burnham has warned that Britain is a “tinderbox” as he scrambled to respond to devastating wildfires across Britain, reports BritPanorama.
In response to the escalating situation, Burnham announced a ban on disposable barbecues, urging the public not to light any open fires and to manage cigarettes carefully amid a “combustible” risk. He cautioned, “You are taking risks with other people’s homes, with other people’s lives, if you act recklessly.”
The Prime Minister also revealed plans to commission firefighting planes similar to those used in Europe and the US to tackle the rampant wildfires. Emergency financial support for fire services battling the blazes is also being planned.
On a visit to Stourbridge, where the impact of a significant fire was evident, Burnham emphasized the necessity to “face up” to the challenges posed by climate change and to transition towards “more clean energy.”
Reflecting on the unprecedented nature of these fires, he stated, “I’ve never seen anything like it. I mean, I dealt with wildfires in Greater Manchester, but nothing on this scale.” He expressed sympathy for those affected, highlighting the distressing scenes of homes destroyed.
As part of the emergency response, the military has deployed 100 personnel to assist in fire mitigation, particularly in South Wales. Burnham noted the critical need for this support while outlining the current mutual aid system between fire and rescue services across regions.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the lack of aerial firefighting capabilities in the UK but confirmed that discussions were underway to bring back military Chinook helicopters from Cyprus, which are equipped for water-bombing efforts. “We have taken a decision to deploy nationally aerial firefighting support,” he added, stressing its necessity.
Furthermore, a temporary ban on disposable barbecues went into effect recently, with enforcement requested from retailers. Government advice emphasized that such products are unsafe under current environmental conditions, which have contributed to a series of serious wildfires.
Record temperatures have exacerbated the situation this year, marking the first instance of three separate days exceeding 37C and the most heatwaves endured in a summer characterized by prolonged drought in England and Wales.
In the West Midlands, where the fires have been most intense, a total of 54 individuals have received medical attention, including 19 taken to hospitals. Reports indicate some fire service personnel have also needed hospitalization due to smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion from their efforts.
One notable incident involved a blaze on Norton Road, resulting in emergency treatment for several individuals due to smoke-related conditions. Local authorities have confirmed that fire crews are actively working to control the situation as community recovery efforts remain ongoing.
While the local response is progressing, some residents displaced by the Stourbridge fire are still awaiting return to their homes, illustrating the far-reaching impact of the ongoing wildfires.
