Brennan Johnson joins Everton from Crystal Palace in swap deal
Brennan Johnson has completed his transfer to Everton after a disappointing spell at Crystal Palace, with the manager David Moyes’ belief in his abilities being a pivotal reason for his move, reports BritPanorama.
The Wales international has signed a four-year contract with the Toffees as part of a swap deal that sees Dwight McNeil head to Selhurst Park. Johnson’s exit from Palace comes just eight months after his arrival from Tottenham for £35 million.
During his time at Palace, the 25-year-old struggled to leave a mark, failing to find the net in 26 appearances. The opportunity to rejuvenate his career at Everton proved too appealing to resist, particularly after engaging discussions with Moyes reassured him that Goodison Park was the right destination.
“I’m so excited to be here. The club speaks for itself – it’s a massive club and one that when I first heard of the interest, I immediately wanted to come and be part of it,” Johnson stated, underscoring his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead.
He emphasized that Moyes had challenged him to recapture the form he displayed prior to his difficult period at Palace, stating, “The manager spoke to me about getting back to the form that I’ve shown previously, and that’s a massive thing for me – the fact he knows and believes in what I can do.”
Johnson has promised Everton fans that he will work tirelessly for the team, aiming to contribute goals and pace. “I want to bring all of my attributes. First and foremost, I’ll work for the team, the fans, and represent the club properly,” he remarked.
This transfer marks Everton’s fifth addition of the summer, following the activation of Merlin Rohl’s loan obligation and the signings of Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George, and Christian Norgaard. Meanwhile, McNeil’s transfer to Palace resolves a prior deal that fell through on Deadline Day in January due to paperwork issues.
The 26-year-old leaves Everton having made 130 appearances, during which he scored 15 goals and provided 18 assists. “I’m really happy to be here, and looking forward to the challenge ahead,” McNeil commented after finalizing his move.
