Alexander McCall Smith has launched a podcast entitled Positive Distraction, aiming to provide listeners with a source of comfort amid challenging times, reports BritPanorama.
The 77-year-old author describes the podcast as “an antidote to the stresses of everyday life,” where he narrates gently humorous short stories designed to uplift listeners. McCall Smith emphasises the convenience of the podcast format, allowing for short episodes compared to traditional audiobooks that can last for hours.
Born in Zimbabwe, McCall Smith moved to Edinburgh at the age of 17 to study law, eventually becoming a professor. He gained acclaim for his prolific writing, with over 100 novels to his name, including the globally renowned No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. After decades in academia, he shifted focus to his writing career in the mid-2000s, producing five or six books annually. In recognition of his contributions to literature, he was knighted in 2024.
McCall Smith has faced criticism for his positive outlook in writing, particularly in relation to the No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. He argues that highlighting joy and harmony is equally valid to exploring the darker aspects of human experience. His works often focus on themes of friendship and happiness, which he believes are crucial in combating modern loneliness exacerbated by societal changes, such as fewer social interactions in traditional settings. He notes that technological changes have contributed to a decline in the quality of personal connections, particularly among men.
