Steve McClaren mulls return to English football
Steve McClaren is considering a return to English football after emerging as a leading candidate to become Rotherham United’s new director of football, reports BritPanorama.
The former England national football team manager is “seriously thinking about” an offer from the South Yorkshire club, although no final agreement has yet been reached. Rotherham are keen to regroup following a disappointing campaign that concluded with relegation to League Two.
Finishing 11 points adrift of safety, the Millers are embarking on another rebuilding project. The club’s owners are reportedly eager to bring in McClaren to oversee football operations and guide the team back to higher competition.
The 65-year-old has been out of work since stepping down as head coach of Jamaica national football team in November 2024. His departure followed a failure to qualify the Reggae Boyz for the 2026 World Cup, with McClaren citing the need for a new direction as he left.
“Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is to recognise when a fresh voice, new energy and a different perspective is required to move this team forward,” he stated upon his exit.
A potential move to Rotherham would mark another chapter in a career that has seen considerable highs and lows. McClaren gained prominence with Middlesbrough, leading them to their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 2004, and later took the club to the UEFA Cup final two years later.
His stint as England manager began in 2006 but lasted only 16 months, marked infamously by the team’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008 after a defeat to Croatia. This incident earned him the nickname “wally with a brolly,” as he was seen shielding himself with an umbrella during the fateful match.
Throughout his career, McClaren has also managed Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, alongside spells abroad with FC Twente and VfL Wolfsburg. More recently, he served on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at Manchester United until the Dutch manager’s departure in 2024.
While Rotherham have yet to confirm whether McClaren will accept their proposal, the experienced coach is giving the opportunity serious consideration. His potential appointment could represent one of the most significant in the club’s history.
In the world of football management, even a seasoned hand like McClaren faces a turbulent landscape where every decision counts, reminding us just how swiftly fortunes can change in the beautiful game.
