Serena Williams criticizes anti-doping programme ahead of Wimbledon return
Serena Williams has expressed dissatisfaction with the anti-doping programme as she prepares to return to competitive tennis at Wimbledon next week, reports BritPanorama.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, who has not played a singles match in nearly four years, has been training at the All England Club for the past ten days in anticipation of her comeback.
Williams, 44, characterized the anti-doping measures as “gruelling,” suggesting that they had previously deterred her from returning to the sport. “That was a big reason why I didn’t want to come back, because it’s just so hard,” she stated, emphasizing the challenges of balancing her busy life, which includes managing a business and family, with the stringent regulations.
“Obviously, I don’t mind because I love, and I always have been very clear about what I do,” she added. However, the complexities of the routine and the requirement to report daily have added to her apprehension.
Williams faced a minor setback earlier at the Queen’s Club when her doubles partner, Victoria Mboko, withdrew due to injury, cutting short her return to play. Reflecting on her emotions, she noted, “I can’t say I had a lot of emotions, only because I think I was in Queens earlier, and I was in London, and I was on the grass.”
Despite these challenges, Williams expressed anticipation about being back on court, stating, “I feel like I’m really going to enjoy being out there.” Her last singles match was a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic at the US Open in 2022, and this upcoming match has altered her perspective on the game.
“I think in general, my expectations are definitely different for the first time in my career,” she mentioned. On Tuesday, she is set to compete against Australia’s Maya Joint on Centre Court as Wimbledon kicks off with other players, including Emma Raducanu, also in action.
As Williams navigates her comeback in the sport, her experience underscores how the intersection of personal and professional pressures can shape an athlete’s journey back to competition. A reminder, perhaps, that the path to greatness often comes with hurdles far beyond the court.
