USS Abraham Lincoln to stop in Thailand after deployment
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier will make a stop in Thailand after its grueling deployment in the Middle East, Thai officials said Wednesday, reports BritPanorama.
The Lincoln has been supporting the U.S. war against Iran and completed over 250 consecutive days at sea. Concerns have emerged regarding the long deployment, particularly regarding the deteriorating mental health of the crew and shortages of essential supplies such as food and hygiene products.
Thai defense ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri confirmed that the Lincoln will dock in Thailand next week to allow the crew some much-needed rest and recovery before returning to its U.S. base.
During a news conference in Bangkok, Kongsiri stated, “The stop in Thailand is a chance for the crew to go ashore and relax.”
On Tuesday, the Royal Thai Navy announced that three ships from a U.S. Navy carrier strike group would visit eastern Thailand, clarifying that no military exercises would take place during this visit.
Extended deployments can significantly strain service members who remain away from home for long durations, affecting both the crew and the ship’s equipment. Despite a recent calming of hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, the Navy is maintaining a reimposed blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing conflict approaches its six-month mark with no clear resolution from the Trump administration.
Separately on Wednesday, the U.S. Navy’s top officer addressed concerns about supply challenges during the ongoing conflict. Adm. Daryl Caudle remarked that while basic food items were sufficient, there were deficiencies in hygiene products and other comfort items that sailors typically expect during long deployments.
He noted that different supply chains manage parts, food, and “niceties,” which contributed to initial difficulties in the replenishment process. Caudle acknowledged, “It’s a fair critique that there were some puts and takes at the beginning of Epic Fury until we got that dialed in,” referring to the war’s codename.
The U.S. embassy in Bangkok did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the Lincoln’s upcoming visit, and the U.S. Navy declined to comment.
