Escalating tensions in the Iran conflict as Houthis attack Saudi oil installations
The Iran war broadened over the weekend despite a pause in U.S. strikes, as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis attacked Saudi oil installations along the Red Sea coast, reports BritPanorama.
The U.S. military stated on Saturday that its naval blockade against Iran “remains in full effect” but did not clarify why it suspended a series of 13 consecutive nights of escalating strikes. There were also no weekend reports of attacks by Iran on neighboring countries, contrasting with its previous daily responses to U.S. operations.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz commented that the pause in strikes is related to ongoing negotiations between the two countries. “What the president is doing right now, as we’ve seen all along, is giving some talks, some space,” he noted. Waltz added that there is “internal fighting” within Iran about its direction and leadership.
According to a senior Iranian source, Iran would cease its attacks as long as the United States maintains its suspension of strikes, though skepticism prevails regarding U.S. intentions. “Iran’s position remains ‘attack for attack’: if the attacks stop, Iran will also halt its operations,” the individual stated, emphasizing that the notion of a pause is seen more as a tactical maneuver than a genuine shift.
Reports indicate that President Trump has, for the time being, opted against intensifying military actions against Iran. Concerns about the risks of expanding the conflict, including the depletion of defense resources and potential repercussions for energy supplies, influenced this decision, according to sources cited by the New York Times.
Moreover, Vice President JD Vance and Gen. Dan Caine expressed apprehensions about the U.S. munitions stockpile during a White House meeting, contributing to a general pause in operations, as confirmed by a Department of Defense source.
Despite a lull in U.S. engagements, Saturday witnessed Houthis attacking sites linked to Saudi state oil company Aramco in Jizan and Yanbu. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported the strikes, and video footage verified by Reuters showed significant smoke rising from the Aramco refinery in Jizan.
Two missiles targeting oil installations in Yanbu, a critical port for Saudi oil exports, were intercepted. This area has become increasingly significant as Saudi oil continues to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blockaded.
In response, the Saudi-backed government in Yemen conducted air strikes against Houthi locations in the Marib and al-Jawf provinces, as both factions reinforced their positions along the front lines.
Saudi Arabia, leading an Arab coalition, has battled the Houthis since the group seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. The civil war, which has resulted in widespread devastation and loss of life, had been calm since a ceasefire was established in 2022. However, the ceasefire unraveled this month as the Houthis aligned more closely with Iranian military efforts against U.S. and Israeli actions.
The Houthis recently declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and asserted that all Saudi oil facilities could now be considered potential targets, underscoring the precarious nature of the situation. The conflict continues to display a complex interplay of regional hostilities and shifting alliances that could redefine geopolitical landscapes in the Middle East and beyond.
