Thomas Tuchel defends selection amid injury setback

Thomas Tuchel has defended his decision to call up Trevoh Chalobah after Tino Livramento’s World Cup was cut short by injury, while continuing to overlook Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold, reports BritPanorama.

England faced a major setback before their opening Group L clash with Croatia when Livramento suffered a calf injury during training. The Newcastle defender is understood to have sustained a low-grade tear and will return home after scans confirmed he could not contribute further to the tournament.

Although Livramento’s injury is not deemed serious, the recovery timeframe has been assessed as too lengthy for him to remain with the squad in North America. He is expected to continue rehabilitation ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

In light of this situation, Tuchel has brought in Chelsea defender Chalobah, who was not part of the initial 26-man squad. This decision has drawn scrutiny, as Chalobah is primarily a centre-back, while the fit and available Alexander-Arnold remains absent. This means Reece James is the only recognised right-back option in the team.

Tuchel expressed confidence in Chalobah’s capabilities, stating, “We called Trevoh Chalobah because we then free up Jarell Quansah as a full-back on both sides and Djed Spence can be a full-back on both sides. Trevoh comes as a centre-back alternative and gives us full coverage in the back four.”

The England manager acknowledged Livramento’s withdrawal as a painful moment for the player and his teammates. He noted, “Tino was of course very disappointed and very sad. All of us were.” Despite Livramento’s predicted role as a substitute in the group opener, Tuchel has emphasised the importance of players capable of influencing matches later on, especially with the tournament conditions.

With the climate across the United States, Mexico, and Canada reaching high temperatures, Tuchel recognises that squad depth will be critical as the tournament progresses. He believes hydration breaks and the challenging environment may affect players’ sprint capabilities but insists on retaining England’s dynamic style of play. “I’m just not ready to adapt into a different style of football because of circumstances that we cannot influence,” he stated.

England’s opening match will take place inside the air-conditioned Dallas Stadium, which Tuchel hopes will help maintain the intensity he demands from his team. For Chalobah, this late call-up presents a significant opportunity to prove himself on a grand stage as England seeks their first World Cup triumph since 1966.

Yet, the omission of Alexander-Arnold is expected to raise ongoing questions, particularly if England encounters defensive issues in the right-back area during the competition.
