Bruno Guimaraes ruled out for Arsenal’s season opener
Arsenal’s Premier League title defence gets under way this evening at the Emirates Stadium against Coventry City, but the champions will be forced to do so without their marquee summer acquisition Bruno Guimaraes, reports BritPanorama.
The Brazilian midfielder, who arrived from Newcastle United in a blockbuster £75 million deal earlier this summer, has been ruled out of tonight’s curtain-raiser owing to a thigh complaint sustained during last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
Guimaraes had started that encounter at the Principality Stadium but was withdrawn at the interval, subsequently seen nursing the affected area with an ice pack on the bench. According to reports, the injury could keep the 28-year-old sidelined for a number of weeks — a significant setback for a player who had only just begun settling into his new surroundings in north London.
He had featured in a pre-season friendly against Como before being handed a start in the Community Shield, playing a key role as Arsenal seized early control against City. The severity of the knock does not appear to be major, however, with suggestions that the former Newcastle man could potentially be available for the trip to Aston Villa on 31 August.
Ahead of tonight’s fixture, Mikel Arteta offered a cautious assessment of his midfielder’s condition. “Let’s see,” the Arsenal manager told reporters. “It’s evolving well, but let’s see. He had a slight tension in his groin. He hasn’t done a pre-season; he only had four or five days before that [Man City] game. We have to take a lot of new stuff for him as well. We need to take it bit by bit.”
With Guimaraes unavailable, Declan Rice has been named alongside young Myles Lewis-Skelly in the centre of midfield against Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side. Martin Odegaard starts ahead of the duo in a more advanced role, shouldering greater creative duties in the absence of the Brazilian international.
Should Guimaraes recover swiftly, the Monday evening clash at Villa Park could mark his first Premier League appearance in Arsenal colours. Chelsea then visit the Emirates on 6 September. The Gunners face further personnel concerns at the back, with William Saliba and Jurriën Timber both absent from tonight’s squad. Saliba continues to recuperate from a back issue that is expected to keep him out for the opening months of the campaign, after the club opted against surgical intervention during the summer. Timber, meanwhile, has been sidelined since March with a groin problem that curtailed his season and has yet to rejoin first-team training.
Despite the mounting absentee list, Arteta struck a defiant tone regarding his side’s ambitions. “Those teams have an incredible quality, which is to maintain the standards daily at the highest level,” he stated. “It is an opportunity that we have. I have no question that our players have that desire and the ambition to do that. Now it’s something that we have to earn and do daily.”
As the new season begins, the pressure mounts not solely on Mikel Arteta but on a squad grappling with ambitions and injuries alike — a reminder, perhaps, that even the strongest lineups can be tested in unexpected ways.
