Roy Keane critiques Liverpool fans after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return

Roy Keane has questioned the “classy” reputation of Liverpool supporters after Trent Alexander-Arnold was met with boos and jeers on his Anfield return, reports BritPanorama.

The England defender, now with Real Madrid, was substituted into the match during the final ten minutes as his team trailed 1-0. As he entered the pitch, he was greeted with a chorus of boos.

Some fans reportedly stood and applauded Alexander-Arnold, contrasting sharply with the hostile reception he faced. Reflecting on the situation, Keane, a Manchester United legend, expressed disappointment with the Liverpool crowd’s reaction.

“The reputation of Liverpool fans is that they are loyal and a level up from most supporters,” Keane stated on the Stick to Football podcast. “Whatever anyone else says, I think for any player to go back with the service he gave, his contract was up, to boo him.”

Keane further elaborated, suggesting that the jeering of a local lad who has made significant contributions to the team is unwarranted. “To go to the effort of thinking, ‘I’m going to boo this kid’ as a local lad and Liverpool fans, for some reason, think they’ve got class. Liverpool fans have to have a good look at themselves,” he said.

The context surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s return is significant; the right-back had spent 20 years at Liverpool before his recent transfer to Real Madrid for a reported £10 million. Ahead of the match, a mural of him in Liverpool was vandalised, with derogatory messages scrawled over it. This act highlighted the tension surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s move, as he had previously expressed his enduring affection for the club despite the circumstances of his departure.

As the game unfolded, Alexander-Arnold had previously stated, “Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans. I’ll always love the club, I’ll always be a fan of the club.” His dedication to Liverpool remains, irrespective of the reception from supporters, reflecting a complex relationship that often emerges in football.

In football, emotions can run high, and allegiances can shift dramatically, illuminating the intricate dance between personal loyalty and fan expectations.
