Mike Wozniak prepares for Edinburgh Fringe with unique show
Mike Wozniak is set to showcase his new tour show, The Bench, at the Edinburgh Fringe next week, a production he describes as a choose-your-own-adventure whodunnit that blends comedy and local mystery, reports BritPanorama.
The show is structured to allow audience participation, starting with Wozniak presenting a scenario about an act of vandalism in Exeter, before inviting the audience to investigate further. This improvisational approach means that each performance is distinct, depending on the audience’s queries and engagement.
Wozniak’s comedic style has evolved over the years, having initially attempted observational stand-up, which he found challenging. Instead, he embraces a more spontaneous and meandering form of comedy, evident in his podcast Three Bean Salad and various panel show appearances. His current work reflects this charm and quick wit, resonating with fans both on stage and through audio.
At 46 years old, Wozniak reflects on his upbringing in a conservative Portsmouth environment, explaining how his family’s diverse background—a mix of Welsh miners and Polish war refugees—has shaped his comedic narrative. He cites early influences from renowned comedians, noting that his childhood exposure to comedy fostered a desire to perform.
Wozniak’s recent recognition stems from his participation in the 11th season of Taskmaster, in which he garnered attention for his humorous antics. His long-standing relationship with the show’s creator, Alex Horne, and host, Greg Davies, has enriched his career. He fondly recalls his experience on the sitcom Man Down, where he felt a deep sense of joy and fulfillment.
While he acknowledges that he appears less frequently on television now, Wozniak remains committed to his podcast, which has attracted a significant audience due to its improvisational nature. He points out that the show maintains a diverse listener base, going beyond demographic stereotypes often associated with male-dominated comedy.
Despite his success, Wozniak maintains a humble outlook. While he dreams of writing a sitcom, he prioritizes enjoying live performances and the connections made with audiences. His confidence in his comedic abilities is underscored by his light-hearted reflections on personal quirks, such as his signature moustache, which he regards as an integral part of his identity.
