Andoni Iraola reflects on positives and negatives after Liverpool's 4-2 defeat to Leeds

Leeds pull off dramatic comeback to defeat Liverpool

New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has admitted that there were both positives and negatives to take despite his side losing 4-2 to Leeds in a pre-season friendly in Chicago, reports BritPanorama.

The Reds initially looked set for victory as Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz found the net in the first half. However, Leeds responded impressively after the break, rallying with goals from Brendan Aaronson, Sean Longstaff, and a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

This defeat marked a stark contrast to Liverpool’s previous pre-season successes under Iraola, who is now taking the helm following a challenging term with former manager Arne Slot.

Iraola expressed disappointment with the result but highlighted the learning opportunities presented by the match. “I think we learn a lot of things,” he stated. “Obviously it’s not the result you want but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half.”

Pre-season games are primarily aimed at enhancing fitness levels and match sharpness. Notably, Liverpool welcomed back Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch, all of whom had recently returned from World Cup duty.

Meanwhile, Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s spirited comeback. He noted the need for his players to be ‘braver’ on the ball but also expressed some frustration at their failure to maintain possession more effectively.

Reflecting on the changing dynamics of the match, Farke commented, “In football, sometimes the momentum can change a lot… This sometimes does something with the self-confidence a bit.”

The unpredictable nature of pre-season friendlies serves as a reminder that while results matter, the journey towards form and cohesion often presents as many questions as it does answers.
