Emma Raducanu confirms absence from US Open

Emma Raducanu has confirmed she will not compete at this year’s US Open, the Grand Slam where she etched her name into sporting history half a decade ago. The 23-year-old British No. 1 continues her recovery from a stress fracture in her lower right leg, an injury that has kept her sidelined since before Wimbledon, reports BritPanorama.

Raducanu first suffered the injury on the eve of Wimbledon, where what was initially described as a minor lower leg niggle was later diagnosed as a stress fracture. Following consultations with her medical team, it became evident that further healing time was needed before she could return to competitive play.

This absence marks another challenging chapter for Raducanu in a season fraught with setbacks. Prior to the current injury, she dealt with bone bruising in her foot, which disrupted her pre-season training, and a post-viral illness forced her to withdraw from competition for over two months between March and May. As a result, her world ranking has fallen to No. 49, a stark contrast to her status as a former Grand Slam champion.

While she has shared glimpses of her rehabilitation on social media, including clips of her practicing serves with her leg still in a protective boot, the cumulative toll of these injuries has made this season a lost opportunity for consolidation and growth. Raducanu’s connection to Flushing Meadows is particularly significant; it was here in 2021 that she captured the nation’s imagination by winning the title as a qualifier at just 18 years old.

With the US Open concluding on 13 September, she will have been away from competitive tennis for a full three months by the time the tournament ends. Raducanu has expressed her sadness over missing an event so pivotal in her career. For now, her focus remains on recovery, with her team prioritising a full return to fitness.

In the end, Raducanu’s journey serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sport, where fortunes can shift dramatically and the road to recovery can often be just as demanding as the victories along the way.
