AI camera glasses permitted inside Parliament amid security concerns

Members of Parliament, staff, and visitors are now allowed to wear AI camera glasses inside the Parliamentary Estate, despite growing concerns over potential security and privacy risks, reports BritPanorama.

The use of these glasses, which come equipped with tiny cameras and microphones, is subject to stringent restrictions that prohibit unauthorized recording. Parliamentary leaders are currently evaluating the rules governing smart glasses and other wearable technology in light of these concerns.

Shadow Security Minister Alicia Kearns has raised alarms about the implications of such gadgets, stating they could serve as tools for espionage. She remarked, “Smart glasses provide a new tool to the world of espionage. Parliament is a sacred place . . .  That must be upheld and protected. We cannot allow smart glasses to comprise Parliament and create new opportunities for our enemies to attack Britain.”

The review aims to determine whether additional guidance is required regarding the use of smart glasses and their impact on the security and confidentiality within Parliament. Smart glasses enable users to capture photos, videos, and audio discreetly, raising questions about privacy in sensitive settings.

Moreover, the review will extend to examining the overall physical and information security protocols currently in place. Existing regulations already prohibit recording with smart glasses without the necessary permissions, but recent discussions suggest that a reassessment may be warranted.

As Parliament navigates these evolving technological landscapes, the debate will likely continue regarding the balance between innovation and the safeguarding of national interests.

The implications of allowing wearable technology in government spaces raise important questions about privacy and security, suggesting that future regulations will need careful consideration to protect both public transparency and confidentiality.
