Rory McIlroy warns PGA Tour over future of Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy has issued a warning to the PGA Tour regarding the **future of the Scottish Open** as it introduces its **two-tier format** in 2028, reports BritPanorama.

The new system stipulates that the schedules for the Championship and the second-tier Challenger will run concurrently. Consequently, Championship players will not compete in Challenger events and vice versa.

This change raises concerns for the Scottish Open, as it will be classified as a Challenger competition, which risks excluding prominent players from participating due to their ineligibility. The current co-sanctioning by the PGA and DP World Tours has allowed players from either tour to participate if ranked highly enough.

Commenting on the potential impact, McIlroy stated: “We’ve got to be careful with that because then these national opens lose the fabric of what they are. You can’t call yourself a national open any more if it’s a closed-off tournament and there’s a certain number of guys. These events need to be treated differently than the Travelers Championship or RBC Heritage or whatever else is going to be in the Championship series.”

The Scottish Open has historically attracted top talent, including **World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler**, who is competing in the event leading up to the Open Championship next week. Scheffler noted that it would be “hard to tell” about the inclusion of DP World Tour players under the new framework, observing that it complicates the ranking system when players are not competing together regularly.

Scotland’s leading professional, Bob MacIntyre, emphasized the need for “exemptions” for his home Open, advocating for a more inclusive approach to keep the tournament vibrant and competitive. McIlroy, reflecting on the landscape of the sport, remarked, “To have this tournament fit into that mould would be really nice,” supporting the notion of maintaining a cohesive and competitive schedule.

As the debate continues over the implications of the PGA Tour’s new structure, the **Scottish Open** finds itself at a crossroads, balancing tradition with the realities of evolving competitive formats. The evolving dynamics underscore how closely intertwined sport and administration can be, reminding all involved of the stakes at play in maintaining the integrity of championship events.
