Richard Dunne criticises VAR decisions after West Ham’s controversy against Arsenal
Richard Dunne has launched a scathing attack on the ‘soft’ state of modern officiating following a controversial VAR decision that denied West Ham a last-minute equaliser against Arsenal last weekend, insisting that VAR is stripping the game of its essential physicality, reports BritPanorama.
The Hammers believed they had salvaged a point when Callum Wilson bundled the ball into the net late in the match, only for VAR officials at Stockley Park to intervene and disallow the goal due to a perceived foul in the build-up.
This decision left the visiting side fuming, while Arsenal celebrated the victory, extending their lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Dunne did not hold back in his assessment of the officiating. “It was a soft call by the referee and VAR to disallow the goal,” he told media outlets. “The referee gave the goal and with everything going on in the penalty area, I felt it was a soft call to overturn it.”
The former City captain argued that the current implementation of technology fails to consider the inherent chaos present during set-pieces. He emphasised that consistency is crucial for officiating, notably in situations involving goals from corners where both teams engage in physical contests. “As a defender, you have to be strong in these moments and also the goalkeeper too,” he added.
