York City player allegedly punches fan during pitch invasion
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has issued a statement following an incident in which a York City player appeared to punch a Rochdale fan, reports BritPanorama.
York City secured a dramatic promotion back to the EFL after a last-minute equaliser on the final day of the National League season. The goal, scored in the 103rd minute, capped a decade away from the Football League for the Minstermen.
The tension escalated after Rochdale’s Emmanuel Dieseruwe headed his side into the lead in stoppage time, prompting a pitch invasion by jubilant Rochdale supporters. During the chaos, York midfielder Hiram Boateng was involved in an altercation with a fan, which was captured on multiple video clips circulating online.
According to reports, Boateng appeared to swing at the supporter after being knocked to the ground. GMP confirmed they are assessing the incident and reviewing CCTV footage. They stated, “We are aware of a video that is circulating of a possible assault involving a player and we have linked in with both clubs and the National League.”
It remains unclear what provoked the incident, particularly given the short clip viewed online. Five arrests occurred during the match—four involving Rochdale fans and one from York. Boateng has since been approached for comment but had not responded by the time of publication.
The events overshadowed what was an exhilarating contest, with both teams amassing a combined 212 points this season, a reflection of their strong performances throughout the campaign.
York’s promotion signifies an end to a challenging period, having spent the last ten years outside the Football League, while Rochdale now shift their focus to the upcoming playoffs, where they will aim to claim a return through an alternative route.
As the dust settles, this incident serves as a stark reminder of how fragile the line can be between celebration and chaos in football, underscoring the ever-present volatility of the sport. The hope remains that such moments do not detract from the beautiful game itself and the stories it creates on and off the pitch.
