British surfer presumed dead off Portugal coast
A top British surfer is presumed dead after authorities called off a search near the coast of Portugal, reports BritPanorama.
Arran Strong, a competitive surfer, went missing off the southern Portugal on Monday morning. The Autoridade Maritima Nacional (AMN) confirmed it called off the search on Thursday after extensive efforts to locate him.
The 28-year-old had represented Great Britain at each of the previous two World Surfing Games, achieving the highest rank for a British competitor at both events. Witnesses noted that Strong struggled in the water, disappearing while crossing from Monte Clerigo beach to Carrapateira.
His friend and coach, Jose Maria Pyrrait, was rescued by a nearby fishing boat but did not witness the moment Strong went missing. Pyrrait described the experience as harrowing, recounting his attempts to locate Strong over a span of two hours before activating a rescue.
GB Surfing expressed its condolences, highlighting Strong’s contributions to the sport and his positive impact on teammates. “Beyond his performances in the water, Arran was a fantastic team-mate, respected competitor and a kind, generous presence whose passion for surfing left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” the organization stated, calling his passing a “devastating loss.”
In tributes, Pyrrait wrote on social media that “Arran was like a son to me,” emphasizing their close bond and years of training together. Fellow surfers also shared their condolences, reflecting on Strong’s vibrant personality and the joy he inspired in others.
