Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly refuses to return to Portugal while Jorge Jesus remains manager
Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly refuse to return to the Portugal national team while Jorge Jesus is the manager, despite the coach’s insistence that the striker would be welcome back next month, reports BritPanorama.
Ronaldo departed the national team camp after being benched during Portugal’s match against Norway and subsequently missed the final two matches of the international break.
Jesus has stated that Ronaldo is welcome to return if he is playing for Al-Nassr and wishes to rejoin the squad, with the coach focused on mending their relationship. However, Portuguese journalist Rui Santos asserts that the 41-year-old has lost faith in Jesus’s management and is reluctant to play under him.
“He reportedly vented that he will not return to the national team, at least while Jorge Jesus is in technical command,” Santos informed CNN Portugal. “He is not satisfied in the slightest with the handling of this entire process. He was particularly outraged by the content of the statements made by Jorge Jesus, the head coach.”
Ronaldo’s discontent reportedly stemmed from his exclusion during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, marking the first time in 18 years that he was left on the bench in an international match. Following this incident, he missed three training sessions before departing the camp, returning home on a private jet without attending the subsequent match against Norway.
Santos noted that Ronaldo was also frustrated by what he perceived as mixed messages from Jesus, who welcomed Ronaldo’s potential return while asserting that squad selection was solely his responsibility and that he owed no apologies.
Jesus has publicly downplayed the controversy, asserting there was “no incident whatsoever” and “nothing to make a fuss about.” After Portugal’s recent win, he stated that the choice to return now rested with Ronaldo.
“If Cris wants to and is playing for Al-Nassr, he’ll be in the next squad. We talked before this squad and we can talk before the next one. It’s Cris who will decide,” Jesus remarked.
While Ronaldo confirmed on Instagram that he had left the camp following Jesus’s press conference, he indicated his intention to reveal “the truth” about this decision “in due time,” while extending his best wishes to the team and fellow players.
This dispute arrives amidst growing speculation regarding Ronaldo’s future with the national team. Despite this turmoil, Portugal has won all four matches under Jesus since his appointment on a four-year deal in July, including recent victories over Norway and Denmark, even in Ronaldo’s absence. The striker’s situation has ignited discussions about whether Portugal can evolve beyond its most iconic player, with suggestions he may face a six-month ban for his conduct.
In an era where sport and stardom collide, Ronaldo’s chapter seems far from over, yet his journey with the national team appears increasingly complex, illustrating the shifting dynamics in football. The coming weeks will be telling as both he and Portugal navigate these turbulent waters.
