The supermarket giant acquired the catalogue retailer a decade ago

Sainsbury’s has announced plans to offload long-troubled catalogue retailer Argos to a private equity-backed consortium in a £120m deal, reports BritPanorama.

The supermarket giant stated that the sale will enable it to concentrate on its core food business, which is expected to enhance cash generation and improve margins.

Sainsbury’s acquired Argos a decade ago; however, the retailer has continually hindered the supermarket’s profitability, generating speculation regarding its potential divestment.

Argos will be taken over by a newly established company led by On the Beach chairman Richard Pennycook and former Morrisons CEO Trevor Strain, with the acquisition supported by private equity firm True Capital.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Simon Roberts noted, “Sainsbury’s has transformed Argos into a leading multichannel retailer with millions of customers and thousands of talented colleagues.” He further emphasized that the divestment allows the company to focus its resources and investment on significant future opportunities.

Richard Pennycook of Swift Partners expressed confidence in Argos’s future, sharing, “What attracted us to Argos is the strength of the business, with a trusted brand, loyal customers and dedicated colleagues.”

Pennycook added, “Argos’s combination – of a strong digital business supported by standalone stores, stores inside Sainsbury’s and Local Fulfilment Centres – gives it a distinctive position in the market and an excellent platform for growth.”

He reaffirmed the consortium’s commitment to strengthening Argos’s customer proposition, digital capabilities, and nationwide presence.

Overall, the sale marks a significant shift for Sainsbury’s as it aims to sharpen its operational focus amid intense competition within the retail sector.

In a pivotal move for Sainsbury’s, this divestment signals a clear strategic realignment aimed at bolstering profitability. As the supermarket harnesses its resources on core operations, the future trajectory of Argos, under new ownership, will be closely observed by market analysts for indications of its growth and adaptation strategies.
