Olivia DeKold, a once gravely ill child, now thrives despite chronic health challenges

Olivia DeKold’s inspiring journey

At 26, Olivia DeKold continues to defy the odds despite a lifelong battle with a severe digestive condition. After enduring multiple surgeries and nearly dying at eight, she has emerged as an example of resilience. Olivia was diagnosed with intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a rare disorder where the intestines fail to function normally. This condition has led to a series of complex medical interventions, including a colostomy and a reliance on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) delivered directly into her bloodstream. She is now happily married, actively traveling, and pursuing outdoor activities, reports BritPanorama.

Her diagnosis came just before her second birthday after numerous attempts to manage chronic vomiting and constipation. Surgeons ultimately removed her colon, creating openings in her abdomen to allow waste to exit her body. Nutrition was then provided through tubing inserted near her heart, which, while life-sustaining, made her susceptible to infections.

Olivia’s challenges intensified when she faced severe abdominal pain at eight, leading to a critical surgery that revealed a dangerously swollen portion of her small intestine. This episode highlighted the precarious nature of her health and her ongoing need for medical attention. Despite these trials, she has adopted an active lifestyle that includes travel and outdoor recreation, showcasing her determination. Her friend Keta Jeaux noted, “She’s a total firecracker. Olivia’s gotten more out of life so far than most people, and that is through pure conscious willpower.”

As for her medical journey, Olivia is currently under the care of Dr. Paul Wales at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, who has treated her for years. He emphasizes her remarkable resilience, stating, “Olivia never gives up. She manages her condition and doesn’t let it define who she is.” Even with significant challenges ahead, such as potential liver failure due to long-term TPN use, she maintains a perspective that prioritizes living fully. “I’ve always been hungry for life,” she shares. “And I have chosen to believe the best-case scenario will happen to me.”

Living with intestinal pseudo-obstruction

Olivia’s condition—intestinal pseudo-obstruction—causes the digestive tract to behave as if it is blocked despite no physical obstruction. This rare disorder leads to significant pain and requires constant medical management. Olivia’s childhood was marked by relentless medical interventions, but she describes home life as vital for maintaining normalcy. “My mom did a really good job of making it not be all about my illness,” she recalls. This environment contributed to her resilience.

Dr. Wales and his team explored new surgical options to enhance Olivia’s quality of life. His approaches involve reducing the intestine’s length and diameter, mitigating some of the severe symptoms of her condition. Olivia reflects on this journey with gratitude, recognizing the struggles she has faced but also celebrating her triumphs. She credits her ability to thrive despite adversity to her supportive upbringing and determination to pursue her passions.

Despite the hurdles, she continues to inspire others facing similar challenges through her YouTube channel, sharing messages of resilience and hope. Her story highlights the battle many individuals with rare chronic diseases face daily, resonating beyond her personal experience.

Olivia’s journey illustrates the complexities of navigating life with a severe medical condition, emphasizing both the struggles and the power of determination. Her optimistic outlook and commitment to living fully not only resonate with her peers but serve as an enduring testament to the strength of the human spirit.
