Understanding the health risks of smoking

Smoking cigarettes affects nearly every organ in the body and has serious health consequences, though many of its most detrimental effects are not widely recognized, reports BritPanorama.

Notably, smoking is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, contributing to heart attacks and strokes. Furthermore, exposure to secondhand smoke poses risks to non-smokers as well, making this a public health concern.

A study published in the journal BMJ Open identified significant gaps in the understanding of these risks among smokers. While over 90% of participants across 46 countries acknowledged that smoking causes lung cancer, many were less aware of its effects on cardiovascular health. Awareness regarding the dangers of secondhand smoke was even lower.

To explore these findings, CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen was consulted. Wen, who has experience as an emergency physician and served as Baltimore’s health commissioner, highlighted the importance of public knowledge in mitigating health risks associated with smoking.

The study analyzed data from two major international tobacco surveys, representing 46 countries. Participants were asked whether they believed smoking causes various health issues, including lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Results indicated that about 92% of smokers acknowledged the connection to lung cancer, while only 85% recognized the link to heart disease.

The gaps in knowledge regarding secondhand smoke were pronounced. Depending on the survey, between 77% and 82% of respondents understood that secondhand smoke leads to lung cancer, whereas only 62% to 73% recognized its role in heart disease or heart attacks.

Such misunderstandings can have significant implications. Dr. Wen pointed out that smoking is a major preventable cause of cardiovascular disease, responsible for 2.6 million deaths attributable to smoking in 2019. In contrast, lung cancer accounted for 1.3 million smoking-related deaths.

Knowledge about health risks profoundly influences behavior. Those who comprehend the full spectrum of dangers may be more compelled to quit smoking. This is particularly critical concerning secondhand smoke; if smokers do not understand the risks their habit poses to others, they might neglect to take preventive measures.

Investigating why there is a disparity in knowledge about smoking and lung cancer compared to cardiovascular effects, Dr. Wen explained that the link to lung cancer has been a longstanding focus of public health messaging. This connection has been emphasized in educational campaigns, whereas the cardiovascular consequences have not been as prominent.

Dr. Wen reinforced that reducing cigarette consumption is not sufficient to negate cardiovascular risks. Even minimal smoking significantly increases the danger. Thus, she advises that quitting is crucial, as cardiovascular health improves rapidly after cessation of smoking.

In summary, individuals who smoke should not only be aware of the immediate harm but also understand the extensive damage smoking inflicts on their bodies, including a heightened risk of heart attacks and strokes. This understanding reinforces the urgency of quitting for the betterment of personal health and the well-being of those around them.
